K18 Mist vs K18 Mask: What Is the Difference and Which Comes First?

This is why the Mist is not simply a lighter spray version of the Mask. Its formula, pH and position in the service have been developed for pre-treatment.

The Mist is also a professional-use product. Someone maintaining damaged hair at home does not normally need to purchase both products. The Leave-In Mask is the appropriate home treatment.

How Is the K18 Mist Used in a Salon?

Before the colour or chemical service, the hair is lightly misted with water. It should be dampened rather than saturated.

The K18 Mist is then applied generously in sections, making sure the areas with the most previous damage receive even coverage. It is left for four minutes and is not rinsed out.

After the four-minute development period, the hair is dried and the planned colour, bleach or chemical service continues as normal. The Mist is therefore not mixed into lightener or permanent colour. It is a separate preparation step applied directly to the hair.

Using too little product or applying it only to the visible top layer can leave the most fragile sections untreated. Careful sectioning matters, especially where the mid-lengths and ends have a history of overlapping bleach.

What Does the K18 Mask Do?

The K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask is used after shampooing, once the colour or chemical service has been completed. It has a pH of approximately 5.0 to 6.0, which is closer to the hair’s natural pH range than the pre-service Mist.

The Mask is not a conventional deep conditioner. It is a concentrated leave-in treatment designed to work on damage caused by bleach, colour, chemical services and heat. It should not be rinsed away after four minutes.

This point causes a surprising amount of confusion. “Mask” usually suggests a thick product that is applied after shampooing and then rinsed out. K18 works differently. Once the four-minute wait is complete, the hair can be combed, styled or followed with other products.

How to Use the K18 Mask Correctly

Shampoo the hair but do not condition it first. Conditioner can leave a surface film that makes it more difficult for the peptide treatment to reach the hair effectively.

Towel-dry thoroughly. The hair should feel evenly damp but should not be dripping, as too much water can dilute the concentrated formula.

Apply between one and three pumps of the full-size Mask according to the hair’s length and density, beginning at the ends and working upwards. The smaller 15ml version has a different pump size, so K18 recommends approximately three to nine pumps. Use the smallest amount that distributes evenly; applying a thick visible coating does not improve the treatment.

Leave the Mask untouched for four full minutes. Do not rinse it out. Once the time has passed, comb through and apply styling products as required.

Conditioner or another leave-in product can be applied after those four minutes when the hair needs additional slip or moisture. The important rule is that conditioner does not come before the K18 Mask.

Do You Need the Mist Before Using the Mask at Home?

No. The Mist is not a compulsory first step every time the Mask is used.
